April 21 is AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund (VGF) Day! On this day in 2009, the Volunteer Generation Fund was created under the Serve America Act. The Volunteer Generation Fund aims to support organizations in boosting their capacity to recruit, engage, and retain volunteers. VGF is a crucial initiative by AmeriCorps. By providing vital resources and professional training, VGF grantees - such as the 探花精选 - expand their volunteer programs and improve service delivery.

"I liked how engaging the training was; there were so many opportunities for discussion, questions, role play, and practice. I feel much more prepared in tutoring going forward."

The 探花精选 is proud to harness the power of volunteers alongside AmeriCorps VGF through the Youth Futures Tutor Improvement Project, a 3-year VGF grant for a multi-site initiative focused on supporting Education & Youth teams to strengthen and expand volunteer tutor programs. Evidence shows that tutoring can have substantial positive effects on student learning. Post-pandemic high-impact tutoring is seen as one of the few evidence-based ways to achieve learning recovery and learning acceleration.

"What I liked most about the training was the scenario-based learning. It provided a realistic and immersive experience that allowed me to practice responding to common challenges I may encounter while working with forcibly displaced youth. I feel better prepared and more confident in my ability to support my students effectively."

10 of 探花精选's Youth & Education teams across New York, New Jersey, Iowa, Georgia, Colorado, Maryland, Washington and Utah are participating in intensive assessment, learning, training, and professional development to expand and strengthen tutoring services thanks to the AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund. Since the beginning of this project, 143 volunteer tutors have received 583 hours of HQ-led technical training designed specifically for tutoring forcibly displaced youth. Engaging volunteers is an essential strategy to not only expand the capacity of youth tutor services but also of welcome for newcomers in our communities.

"I liked hearing the opinions of other tutors. I noticed there were tutors from different parts of the U.S. and it was interesting to hear their experience."
