The European Commission has finally launched its long-awaited New Pact, outlining its new framework for managing asylum and migration in the EU.

This is an important opportunity to break the political deadlock around these reforms, and end the ongoing humanitarian and protection crisis faced by people seeking asylum at Europe鈥檚 borders and beyond. But does it deliver?

Here are the 探花精选鈥檚 initial reactions to how far the Pact's proposals meet to protect and uphold the rights of people on the move 鈥 in the EU and beyond.

Address the protection crisis in the EU, especially in Greece

Our response:

Reinforce and scale up EU resettlement to reach 250,000 places by 2025

Our response:

Invest in integration and social inclusion

Our response:

Newly-arrived migrant children in the classroom in Essen, Germany
Kathlyn, Yasin and Manuel in the classroom in Essen, Germany. They were taking part in an 探花精选-inspired programme that aims to actively support newly arrived children socially, emotionally and linguistically with the transition to secondary school. We鈥檙e calling on the EU to invest more in these types of early integration projects to help all newcomers feet at home and flourish in their host communities.

Protect people on the move at Europe鈥檚 borders and beyond

Our response:

Paul Blow illustration of refugees crossing the Mediterranean in a small boat
The 探花精选 commissioned illustrator Paul Blow to depict the journeys of people traveling along the dangerous Central Mediterranean Route. Tragically, more than 400 people have died at sea attempting to cross the Mediterranean so far this year. It's imperative that the Pact establishes a new, well-functioning search and rescue operation to save lives at sea.

Strengthen the coherence between migration and development policies

Our response:

South Sudanese refugees cross the border from South Sudan to Uganda
South Sudanese refugees cross the border from South Sudan to Uganda. Vulnerable migrants often fall through the cracks of the system - the EU Pact must commit to protect every individual along their entire migration route, from their country of origin to their destination.
