鈥淲hen I have a friend with me, the whole world feels happy,鈥 says Aisha.

Aisha and Na鈥檃em have been through a lot together. Growing up in Al Hodeidah in western Yemen, they were forced to flee three years ago as conflict erupted around the country.

Today they live in Sahdah camp in southwest Yemen, and spend most of their days with each other coming up with ways to make the world a better place.

The conditions in the camp are extremely difficult. Along with a 100 other households, the girls live in make-shift homes, with limited access to adequate shelter, food and water. But despite the challenges they face, they鈥檙e determined to help the people around them.

鈥淥ne day, I鈥檒l become a teacher and Aisha will become a doctor,鈥 explains 11-year-old Na鈥檃em. 鈥淲e鈥檒l put our salaries together and buy things to distribute in the camp. Every month we鈥檒l distribute things to a different camp. We鈥檒l buy them dishes, clothes, gloves, everything.鈥

Aisha and Na鈥檃em are already doing what they can to support others. 鈥淥ne day a blind man came to our school, and he fell down the stairs because he was sick,鈥 recalls Na鈥檃em. 鈥淎isha and I took permission from our teacher and helped collect some money from our class. We bought him breakfast with half of our allowances, and gave him the rest of the money 鈥 we didn鈥檛 think we should keep our breakfast allowance for ourselves.鈥

All over Yemen, people like Aisha and Na鈥檃em are supporting each other, doing what they can in the face of an extraordinary six-year crisis where 80% of the population are in need of aid. But as need increases, humanitarian funding from governments around the world is decreasing, leaving Yemenis at considerable risk of famine.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made things even tougher for Aisha and Na鈥檃em鈥檚 families, with the resulting economic crisis making it difficult for ordinary people to earn a living. 鈥淢y father works as a porter,鈥 explains Na鈥檃em. 鈥淪o sometimes he finds work, and sometimes he doesn鈥檛.鈥

The girls鈥 special friendship carries them through any hardships that come their way. 鈥淚 have lots of friends in the camp, but not like Na鈥檃em,鈥 says 10-year-old Aisha, smiling brightly. The two spend most of their time together, going to school, playing outside, or visiting each other at their homes.

On days when one of them feels down, the other steps up to help them out of it. 鈥淲hen I鈥檓 bored, no one can make me laugh,鈥 says Na鈥檃em. 鈥淢y mum, my brother, and even my sister tell me jokes, and I don鈥檛 laugh 鈥 but when Aisha comes and tells me a joke, I laugh immediately.鈥

鈥淲hen Aisha was small, we used to live in houses made of straw,鈥 says Na鈥檃em. 鈥淚 used to make her toy cars from milk cartons and she would play with them.鈥

Like many girls their age, the two share a passion for reading and drawing, diligently attending school in hopes of a brighter future. 鈥淜nowledge is light, and ignorance is darkness,鈥 remarks Na鈥檃em.

The girls are eagerly supported by their families to stay in school. 鈥淢y mother isn鈥檛 educated, but she encourages me to study,鈥 says Na鈥檃em. The importance of education isn鈥檛 lost on either one of them. 鈥淚f we don鈥檛 study, we won鈥檛 be able to achieve our dreams,鈥 says Aisha.

鈥淚f Aisha doesn鈥檛 come to school one day, I go to her house and explain everything we learned in class that day,鈥 says Na鈥檃em. 鈥淪he does the same if I鈥檓 ever absent.鈥

Aisha and Na鈥檃em understand the importance of education in children鈥檚 lives. 鈥淢y dream is to become a teacher, and not let my students drop out of school,鈥 says Na鈥檃em. 鈥淚f my students dropped out, I would go to their families and convince them to let their children study.鈥

It鈥檚 clear that the girls foresee themselves being friends for a long time. 鈥淵ou should never leave a childhood friend behind, even if you have 500 other friends,鈥 says Na鈥檃em, looking at Aisha with a smile. 鈥淭rue friends are like me and Aisha. I have lots of friends, but I don鈥檛 love anyone like I love Aisha.鈥
