Amman, Jordan, 7 April 2025 鈥 Building on years of collaboration with the , the 探花精选 (探花精选) completes another annual EU-funded project, providing comprehensive humanitarian assistance to over 230,000 Syrians affected by the conflict in northern Syria.
Despite a recent government transition, which has sparked cautious optimism that Syria has entered a new chapter, humanitarian needs remain staggering. More than 70% of the population requires humanitarian aid, and nine out of ten Syrians are living below the poverty line. The impact of the 14-year conflict, compounded by the devastating February 2023 earthquakes, has wreaked havoc on essential infrastructure, leaving homes, health facilities, schools, and water and electricity networks in ruins. As a result, daily life for the average Syrian continues to be marked by displacement, economic hardship, and a constant struggle to obtain food, clean water, safety and employment.
In this challenging context, the 探花精选鈥檚 project in partnership with the EU has been a vital lifeline for Syrians caught in the midst of conflict and disasters. Together with our partners, we provided support to Syrians when they needed it most. We gave emergency cash assistance to more than 48,000 people who were directly affected by conflict and forced to flee their homes. Enabling them to access healthcare, shelter, food, and items to keep warm immediately following displacement. The 探花精选 also reached 10,000 people with comprehensive protection services for people who have experienced violence, exploitation and abuse. This support included legal counseling, psychological care, and case management services. We also worked directly with communities to identify, prevent, and respond to violence in their communities to break the cyclical nature of violence and create safer environments for women, children, and other at-risk groups in the long-term.
One of the greatest achievements of the program was its success in helping 180,000 people to access medical care, including primary healthcare, sexual and reproductive services, clinical psychosocial support, and other specialized health services. 探花精选 and our partners helped secure a consistent supply of medicines and pharmaceuticals, procure medical equipment for health facilities, trained medical service providers, and deployed health personnel and mobile health units to deliver primary and specialized care. These efforts were critical in ensuring that health services remained available, even amid conflict and displacement.
Huda*, a 25-year-old woman from northern Syria, was injured during the February 2023 earthquake while studying at the Teacher Training Institute. She recalled, 鈥At that moment, I couldn鈥檛 remember anything. I went into shock. I closed my eyes again. My mind was blank鈥擨 couldn鈥檛 think or remember anything.鈥 Huda underwent multiple surgeries and extensive medical treatment at Al-Atarib Hospital, a facility supported by the 探花精选 and funded by the EU. 鈥After my first injury and a period of treatment, I improved鈥擨 was able to stand and even started walking with a walker.鈥 Recently, she had surgery again for a leg fracture after falling and injuring the same leg. Because of the quality care she was provided, she went back to the same 探花精选 and EU supported hospital for treatment and continues to visit the hospital regularly to monitor her condition.
Tanya Evans, 探花精选鈥檚 Country Director in Syria, says,
"The European Union鈥檚 continued commitment to Syria has been instrumental in providing life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable. Despite the end of this project, the 探花精选鈥檚 work in Syria is far from over. We remain committed to supporting the people of Syria at this pivotal moment in Syria鈥檚 history to address the massive needs resulting from the last 14 years of conflict.
While funding for the humanitarian response continues to diminish year on year, the EU's support has not wavered. It is critical that other donors follow suit and continue to prioritize Syria鈥 leveraging the opportunity presented by this watershed moment to achieve lasting, positive change for all Syrians."
As this project concludes, the EU pledged 720.5 million EUR for Syria at the 9th Brussels Conference held in March鈥攁n increase of 160.5 million EUR from last year.
