Parwana, Afghan parolee and mother of two, is no stranger to overcoming adversity. When her family fled to the U.S. after the Taliban took control of Kabul, she was prepared to face many challenges as they built a new life for themselves in Maryland. “My only goal was for my kids to go to school, my husband to get a job, and I hoped one day I would learn English.”

The ̽����ѡ helps people whose lives have been shattered by conflict and disaster, reaching those who need it most despite politics, hostilities or harsh climates.

Last year, the ̽����ѡ in Seattle launched the Better Together Family Program to support refugee mothers of young children who are new to the Seattle area. Program participants recently went on a fun, educational, and quintessentially Seattle outing to the Pacific Science Center – complete with a ride on the monorail! Imagine leaving everything behind—your home, your career, your community—arriving in a foreign land with nothing but hope and determination. This is the reality for thousands of refugees seeking safety and a fresh start.

Throughout the month of September, Charlottesville residents heard stories from over a dozen different community members with lived experience, thanks to a collaboration between the ̽����ѡ and WTJU, the University of Virginia’s community radio station. The joint project, “Resettled,” gave 17 current and former Charlottesville clients an opportunity to share their journeys in a series of wide-ranging interviews.
