Progress and challenges in ensuring life-saving services and reducing risks of violence for women and girls in emergencies

The ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ in Atlanta’s Career Development and Adult Education programs, in collaboration with Gwinnett Dental Career Academy (GDCA), recently graduated a second cohort of three former refugees—all young women from Afghanistan—through their Integrated Education and Training (IET) Dental Assistant course, a ten-week program focused on certifying new Americans in dental care and placing them in jobs.

Growing up in Afghanistan, Fatima was taken out of school at a young age and never learned to write her name. After she and her family left their war-torn country to come to Turlock in 2018, she enrolled earlier this year in ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡'s Afghan Path to Wellness course. Now, after finishing the course, Fatima can write her name and has obtained her learner's permit.

When Miriam Barnes first came to the ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡, she was timid and shy, unsure of herself and nervous about communicating. Through strong encouragement from ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ staff and active participation in program activities, Miriam now walks into the ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ office with a new sense of confidence and pride, announcing her new career successes with a smile on her face.
