Background

Founded in 1933, the ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ (̽»¨¾«Ñ¡) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In addition, other at risk individuals and families are served through employment services, job readiness training, adult education and immigration services.

Internship Summary

Interns will support the Caseworker by providing valuable services to clients based on need. Interns will collaborate with the ICM caseworker to establish and develop programs, and leading group classes with clients. S/he may also help with administrative tasks. Must be comfortable working with clients in emotional situations.

Activities

• Assist clients in applying for and renewing benefits;
• Help clients build self-sufficiency skills, especially in the area of navigating community systems;
• Contribute to the design and implementation of psychosocial support groups for clients;
• Accompany clients to appointments and advocate on their behalf when needed;
• Contribute to curriculum designed to teach clients life skills and lead group classes;
• Complete assessments and follow-up with clients;
• Ensure all documentation and case noting is to ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ and donor compliance standards.

Training

In-depth training will be provided for interns to understand ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ programming and the various needs of clients accessing ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ services. A high-level of confidentiality is required when working with ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ clients. 

Skills & Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a formal internship program through local university
• Comfort working with diverse populations and English language learners.
• Previous experience working with refugees, asylees and other vulnerable populations preferred, but not required.
• Experience working in social work/social services preferred, but not required.
