BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The Transportation Volunteer will be a member of the Health Access & Education team focused on ensuring ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ clients are able to get to various doctor’s appointments scheduled by the Health Access staff. Volunteers will transport clients, occasionally via the bus as deemed necessary by ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ staff, and will assist as clients navigate clinics to locate their doctor and process paperwork. Appointments typically last anywhere from 30 min to 4 hours. We do ask that volunteers in this role can support at least once week for a period of 3-4 hours between 7:30am-6pm. Volunteers in this role will receive a substantial amount of one-time one-on-one interaction with ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Drive refugees in personal vehicle to and from various medical appointments
• Provide bus orientations to primary care clinics of refugee clients
• Advocate for client at appointments to ensure proper treatment and interaction
• Communicate questions, successes and challenges with ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ staff

REQUIREMENTS: 

• Must be 18 or older with valid driver’s license and insurance
• Reliable, flexible and able to work independently
• Interest and/or experience working with diverse populations
• Patience is the key to success in this position
